Castle of Sao Jorge

Castle of St. George is located in the historic part of Lisbon. It is located on a hill, making it visible from almost anywhere in the city. This strengthening was included in the 6th century and served as a fortress Visigoths, Romans and Moors. In 1147, the king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques released fortress and turned it into a royal residence. The fort was named in honor of St. George - the patron saint of knights and the Crusades. 

During an earthquake in 1755, the fortress was considerably damaged, and only in the thirties of the 20th century medieval castle walls have been restored. 

Today the castle is open to visitors. On the last combat this formidable castle is evidenced by his harsh rectangular towers and toothy wall. This oasis can be seen inside the castle - the fortress housed two picturesque park. It is impossible not to notice the beautiful peacocks that flash their colorful plumage of all this greenery. 

There are regular guided tours, celebrations, exhibitions and various performances.
