Chiado Museum

Chiado district in Lisbon, is famous for its bookstores, jewelry shops, old cafes, theaters and statues of famous artists. National Museum of Modern Art is located in the area. It was opened in 1911. Until that time, the museum building served as a Franciscan monastery, and later there was a confectionery factory is located, then the Academy of Fine Arts and the National Library. 

The museum houses the Portuguese art of 19th - 20th centuries. The collection of paintings and sculptures presented thematically. Here you can see pictures of Jose Malhoa, as well as sculptures by Auguste Rodin. Among them - the famous masterpiece "Bronze Age". The author is so realistically depicted the ancient nude man that Auguste was accused that he gave the sculpture replica of the sitter's body. Among the most popular exhibits - the self-portrait of the artist Columban Bordallo Pinheiro, who during his life was the director of the museum, as well as two diptychs Almada Negreyrosa modernist art-deco style. 

At the European Festival of Museums 1996 Chiado Museum has received an award.
