Sao Miguel Island
San Miguel was opened in 1427 and named in honor of St. Miguel. Is the largest of the Azores Islands, which belong to Portugal. San Miguel is also called the "Green Island".
It is an island of volcanic origin. The highest point - the Pico da Vara. On the island there are such famous lake is the Lagoa do Fogo (or the lake of fire), Santiago and Lagoa das Sete-Sidadesh.
San Miguel is the administrative and political center of the autonomy of the Azores. The main town of the island - Ponta Delgada. There is a sea port and airport. Key features - fountains, promenade and buildings of the 18th century, and the medieval palaces and churches.
