Convent of the Order of Christ
Convent of the Order of Christ was founded in 1160. In the past belonged to the Templars and their successors. Its construction lasted for five centuries. Near the hill on which the monastery was built, the city was founded in Tomar in 1157.
His church structure resembles a mosque, which is a symbol of union of two religions - Christian and Muslim. The main buildings of the monastery of the Order of Christ - is Round Church and Castle of the Order. Fortress-church has repeatedly been attacked. Significant damage to the church caused the army of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1810. But despite that, this monument of ancient architecture still amazes everyone with its grandeur.
All the walls of the monastery is decorated with ornate Byzantine ornament, posing against the backdrop of the high walls of the fortress unique texture. Castle is surrounded by an old park c old trees. Since 1983, the monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
